3.How I Thought It Would Be
4.Madeore & S. Rodriguez
5.Heart Stained Tangerine

Sarasota, Florida Emo 3 piece Betterment have returned with their latest EP "Raise Your Spirit" and it proves to be the band's best collection of songs to date. With excellent melodic guitarwork and vocals from multiple members that display excellent use of group vocals as well as the tired and true sing/scream dynamic, the band pulls heavily from 90's emo bands such as Braid and Mineral as well as newer more screamo influenced groups such as Algernon Cadwallader, Glocca Morra and Grown Ups. Overall, Raise Your Spirit is an excellent listen that comes highly recommended for fans of the aforementioned bands and the emo genre in general.

Short and Sweet: Four Quick Reviews (Landbridge, Sport, Vyst, Vein)

Artist: Sport
Title: Bon Voyage
Available Format(s): 12" / DD
Label: Adagio830
Holy shit, a friend recently turned me onto these chaps from Lyon, France. Very well constructed emo / indie punk. We are in the midst of a "emo revival", or the tail-end of it and there is a lot of good stuff and a lot of bad stuff out there associated with the sub-genre. This band is doing it very well. Its tinging between like Revolution Summer styled punk/emo and more polished trailblazers not unlike Sunny Day Real Estate and Mineral. Very warm guitars and drum tones. A lot of noodling guitars and quiet, timed out interludes that reminds me of the days when emo bands were as obsessed with old jazz records as much as they were with making their record packaging look like a arts n' crafts workshop project. This is really good stuff and you keep finding new stuff in it with every listen.

Don't know too much about these guys except they listen to a lot of crust/hardcore and they are from Florida. Now, what I am about to say has been loosely used SO MUCH in explaining bands of this caliber but I stand by it. They really, truly understand that Tragedy style crust hardcore sound. I feel most bands fall short on trying to attempt this style for one main reason, for where they drive hard on crust biker d-beats they lack on the amount of melodic, triumphant guitar elements that made Tragedy famously stand apart from the rest of the run of the mill crust outfits at the time. This stuff is solid and they pack in so much for only being a three song demo. Well done orangeheads.

Title: Try Again. Fail Again
Available Format(s): 12" / DD

This band had me sold within 30 second of the opening track. Mainly for the production quality. So warm, big sounding and yet so present, fucking great. Heavy handed "intellectual" sounding hardcore. I believe it has members of Glasses and Perth Express so immediately you know these are seasoned players. Its more of what you would expect from those individuals and I wouldn't expect anything less. This is an amazing record with amazing artwork to match.

Now this is a demo I have been jamming for the past month non stop, at least once a day. Members of East Beast, but don't be fooled. This sounds nothing like their past projects. This is like a reinvention of Dillinger's "Calculating Infinity" era style tech hardcore but modernized and leaning more on the heavier elements. The downfalls of bands trying to pull of this style is that they lack the musicianship but these guys not only execute it, but they own it outright. This is up for free download. If this band sticks around long enough I see them doing big things in the near future.

3.Bread And Circus//Goat Food

Lipschitz are a hardcore/punk band from Odessa, Florida. This new EP has been offered as a free/pay what you want release. It should also be noted that all proceeds generated from the bandcamp donations towards this release will be donated to an awesome cause, per the band's bandcamp page:

We don't need your money for band stuff when other people need it more, if you buy this digitally we arent spending money other than recording but we do that for US and you but still, us, SO, donate if you'd like. Will send you proof that your money went to HAGAR and NOT us."

Ever//Ready features 4 songs of dark and uniquely personal hardcore punk with no regard for current trends, and provides an emotional and cathartic listening experience that feels refreshingly honest, sincere and stripped down. The band will be heading out on tour in late January/early February, with dates you can check out below, and in addition, please contact the band HERE if you can help with filling any of the dates below . Highly recommended for fans of bands such as Ceremony, Dangers and Ruiner.

Review: Xibalba - Tierra Y Libertad

Tierra Y Libertad, the 3rd LP from Pomona, California's Xibalba displays the band maturing and coming more into the forefront of the metal scene. For those expecting a continuation of the sound on Hasta La Muerte, the more hardcore/ beatdown sound has been for the most part pushed into the background as they have come to embrace a more death metal approach. I'm not saying the songs don't sound as hard hitting as they were on Hasta La Muerte, just each song is more structured and has a flow to it that makes it more compelling. The band has also gone through some member changes since their 2012 and it can be heard as the new songs demonstrate more technicality in the playing and in the newer elements in the songs as vocalist Nathan Rebolledo opens some songs like "Guerrilla" in a militant speech like delivery, which also follows through in parts of the title track. For an album that translates to "Land and Liberty" this album's sound and concept are well executed and while it doesn't have the feel of the "Aztec" vibe that was on Hasta La Muerte, this album is a monster of all it's own. The last two tracks the insanely heavy and slam ridden Si Dios Quiere and the somber closer El Vacio show the versatility that Xibalba now possess, moving away from songs that are strictly breakdown ridden and showing a new formula for their songwriting.

Bottom Line: Xibalba have evolved into a new beast, and while the breakdowns may not be as prominent in the songs, their placement makes them almost harder and some of their best. I will also say that many listeners will be surprised by how somber El Vacio is, as it might be one of the softest songs that Xibalba have written in their career but it still ties in nicely to the concept of the album.

Tierra Y Libertad is expected out on 1/27/15 via Southern Lord Records

Wrists Grow Cold are a new band from South Florida who play crusty d-beat in the vein of bands such as Fall Of Efrafra, Tragedy, and From Ashes Rise. These 5 songs are both crushing and melodic in their own right, and are an excellent example of how great this genre can sound when done right. Highly recommended for fans of the aforementioned bands, and an extremely promising sign of things to come.

Crime Desire- Your Power (Review + Free Download)

If Necros, Born Against, and Life’s Blood spawned a child, I feel that San Diego’s Crime Desire would be the perfect representation of that sound. Combining the USHC sound with elements of metal, fastcore, and some crust influences, their newest effort, “Your Power” is a nonstop barrage of 11 boot stomping anthems. The album’s title track and swan song (and the longest song on the album clocking in over 4 minutes) showcases Crime Desire’s efficiency in blending their influences with many of the riffs being more metal influenced and it was one of my favorites along with “Nothing Left”. For those who have been interested in the releases from labels such as Katorga Works, Grave Mistake and etc. then I would definitely not sleep on this release as it fits in great with any of those bands.

With the slow emergence of USHC influenced bands in California (see: Stoic Violence, Blazing Eye, etc.) Crime Desire stay away from the usual formula and to me it is what makes this album work so well. While the other bands rely on and take pride in the gritty nature of their sound and the use of feedback or other noise aspects, Crime Desire adds in their own personal ideas and tastes. This is not to say that it’s much different from the bands mentioned as the lyrical styling is still very much the class dichotomy of rich versus poor and other class/ working class struggles, just the delivery is different via the vocal style (reminiscent of Coke Bust or even Spazz/ Infest at times).

Bottom Line: This album rules and while if you’re looking for the next mosh band it won’t be for you, if you’re a fan of some fast paced hardcore punk, then this is for you. I also recommend catching them live as they put on one hell of a live set.
