Comments DOWNFALL OF GAIA: "The Concept Album "Suffocating In The Swarm Of Cranes" is telling a story about a person who falls victim to his thoughts and becomes consumed by the pressures of the outside world. Suffering from insomnia, the day by day routine and the security that things are completely out of control nowadays, all of this puts so much pressure on him that he is slowly losing his mind. It's a huge story about a person and the sickness, his state of mind and how his psychological conscience develops.
This story is representative for a more and more fast moving time such as today where it's way too easy to lose control and to get buried by the growing weights on our own backs. Compared to our last releases, we've got the most mixed style on the new album and it has a lot of dynamics. It's more aggressive than the other stuff. It still has influences from sludge, black metal, doom, hardcore or post rock parts. It's a wide range of music which makes all of us feel really comfortable!"
Suffocating In The Swarm Of Cranes track listing:
2. drowning by wing beats
3. in the rivers bleak
4. i fade away
5. beneath the crown of cranes
6. giving their heir to the masses
DOWNFALL OF GAIA started out as a crust band, but quickly developed further and have become much more difficult to compare to any other bands. Over the years, their songs became longer, slower, heavier; their influences range from doom to black metal, from down-tempo, to sludge, and hardcore. Their songs have an epic and majestic vibe, with enough musical peaks and valleys to keep listeners rooted firmly to the earth throughout 9:00+ minutes of music.
Since day one, the four-piece has been an active live band, not only performing in Germany, but also throughout the world: Italy, the UK, France, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and the United States have been witness to their live performances. No matter if they are playing a tiny club or a big festival, DOWNFALL OF GAIA are well known for their intense live shows.
"DOWNFALL OF GAIA is the soundtrack to a volcanic eruption! Eerily beautiful like a flow of fiery lava and black ash - an ominous, atmospheric maelstrom of Neurosis and Wolves In The Throne Room."
"Hailing from Germany, these folks really know how to push the limits of a song and drive it in all emotions and musical dynamics!"!
"Downfall of Gaia traverse more harrowing emotion than many bands do in their entire discographies. Both intensely atmospheric and relentlessly hard-hitting, the band takes hardcore fundamentals and pushes them to emotional extremes, flickering between fragility and ferocity".
Watch out for DOWNFALL OF GAIA's new album Suffocating In The Swarm Of Cranes to be released October, 5th/8th via Metal Blade Records in Europe!
Faith Addiction are a hardcore band from Tampa, Florida featuring members of notable Tampa bands Actions Speak Louder, Cellgraft and Feral Babies, among others. After releasing an awesome demo that dropped a while back, they have retooled
their lineup and are releasing these recordings for free, also which are
to be pressed up as their debut 7 inch in a limited quantity. Taking cues from bands such as Brutal Truth(older), Haymaker, and Nails, these 8 tracks rage by in the blink of an eye. Highly recommended for any fan of fast and heavy hardcore.
Ink And Sweat are a melodic/pop punk band from Tampa, Florida. If you are into bands like Latterman and of course the bands that spawned from their ashes you will definitely want to check this out immediately.
Above is a stream of Recreant's "Snakes And Vultures" collection, featuring all of their recordings from their first year as a band. Recreant are a metal band from Tampa, Florida who play a potent combination of chaotic and crusty hardcore and post metal. The addition or violin to this already non-traditional blueprint of extreme metal makes for an even more unique and fresh listen. If you like what you hear in this stream, you can purchase a high quality digital version of the release via their bandcamp page, also linked above. The band has a new LP coming out later this year, so make sure to keep an eye out for that.
Black And Blue: After dropping one of my favorite demos of 2011, I was very excited to hear that Black and Blue was dropping three brand new tracks. To say that Chicago pumps out some of the best hardcore in the world is an understatement. Bandcamp. Download.
Xaphan: What else is there to say? Members of Disembodied, Threadbare, Blinding Light, 108, and Martyr AD doing what the do best, aka throwing down some of the hardest tunes in town. Comparable to their past projects, Xaphan's 4 song demo is a beast in itself. Facebook. Bandcamp (Not available for free download yet).
Vulgar Display: Hailing from Texas, Vulgar Display unleashed a punishing three track demo this July. Much like the members side projects Humanerror and End Times, the band unloads a mix of trash influenced riffs and the style of hardcore you're used to finding in Cleveland. Facebook. Download.
Trespasser: One of the best side project bands to pop up this year. Featuring members of Masakari, Ages, and Our Fight, Trespasser embodied's "Dark Metallic Hardcore" to a tee. Fans of Integrity, Disfear, and All Pigs Must Die need to jump on this ASAP. Facebook. Download.
Skinfather: Based out of Southern California, Skinfather threw down one of my favorite demos of the year thus far. 5 crushing tracks which encase everything I love about Metallic Hardcore, straight Death Metal style riffs and vocal styles are more than welcome in my listening field. Facebook. Download.
Desperate Living: Another gem out of Southern California. Desperate Living caught me completely off guard with their demo. I went to their second show and you could tell there was great potential to build off of, but I didn't expect that potential to be surpassed as soon as the demo dropped. Melodic Hardcore along the likes of Killing The Dream, Modern Life Is War, and Verse. Facebook. Download.
Sweet Jesus: I'm going to do my best to refrain from talking too much about the members past projects, but Sweet Jesus features current/former members of Have Heart, Soul Control, and Verse. Fronted by Pat Flynn, Sweet Jesus released a relatively original sounding demo in a sea of demos that start sounding exactly the same. Preview. Download.
Snakes: "HM-2 Hardcore" at its finest. Grimey as hell hardcore based out of Grand Rapids, Snakes threw down an awesome first effort as a band. Demo/EP features 8 blistering tracks that give the band plenty of space to grow as a cohesive unit. Which was shown drastically with their brand new track on our latest compilation. Facebook. Download.
Black Sheep: I will always have a soft spot for good Beatdown/Metallic Hardcore and Black Sheep hits the nail on the head. New material due out on Arrest Records soon, keep an eye out. Bandcamp (Available for Download)

Blessings are a new project from Sweden with members of Anchor and Scraps Of Tape. This is one of the most promising debut releases I have heard all year, 7 songs of crusty and dark heavy hardcore. Highly recommended.
From the moment I heard Like Rats 2009 Demo/EP release they were a band on my radar. The 7 inch that followed next year was even better and once again the band has stepped up with their crushing debut LP. As soon as the opening riff of "Red Dawn" kicks in the band takes no prisoners in their assault, playing a scathing brand of metallic hardcore with every element of the band running in full gear throughout all 9 songs, all the way through to the epic closer "Russian Midnight". The guitarwork especially is some of the best and most memorable I have heard in the genre in what seems like ages, incredible heavy but laced with hooks that you'll find hard to keep out of your head (just check out the ridiculous opening minute of "Bloodline")0. The vocals sound downright vicious and stay constant at a raspy, high pitched scream that brings to mind the raw, unrelenting feel of early black metal, and help to give the entire record a ominous feel of despair, hopelessness, and downright evil. All the while, the band does an astonishing job crafting songs that take the best influences from classic bands such as Entombed, Gehenna and Godflesh (the latter who I am almost certain the band is named after) while still managing to be so much more then simple tribute/worship to said influences. The production is another standout aspect worth mentioning. It's been a while since I've heard a record the manages to maintain it's raw nature while still having an absolutely colossal and crystal clear sound, with absolutely no element of the band sounding muddled and absolutely nothing getting buried in the mix. As far as metallic hardcore goes, this band has the whole package and more, and this marks yet another stellar release from A389 Records and a sure spot in my top 10 this year. Check below for a stream of the opening track "Red Dawn" below as well as a link to preorder the record, which will be shipping out August 23rd. A must listen for all those who worship the riff.
