Stream: Axis/Weight Of The World Split

A much anticipated split on my end, two of the best new bands in Florida lock up for a split 7". Axis is a heavily 90's influenced hardcore band in vein of Turmoil, Harvest, and early Snapcase. Weight of the World is an early 2000's influenced hardcore band in the vein of Battery, What Feeds the Fire, and Faded Grey. The Split will be out via On Point Records in May/June.

Countdown To Oblivion- Discography Review

Sometimes there are certain people that you can just always expect great things from. Chris Colohan has easily one of the most impressive bodies of work behind him; with, I am only certain, more coming along. Every band Chris has been in is devastating, fast and intense. I was excited to get the opportunity to review the Countdown to Oblivion discography, soon to be released by A389 records, because I actually just recently stumbled on the band myself. I was very familiar with Chris’ other work but for some reason had never CTO and I was missing something really amazing.

Never heard CTO? What you can expect then is straight forward fast hardcore, similar to Left For Dead and The Swarm, but with a fusion of metallic riffs that keep the songs in a constant state of progression. The songs are short; all clocking in under 3 minutes, but the short works are packed to capacity full of diverse riffs and continually changing speeds. I think the most unique attribute of the band’s catalogue is the use of gang chants that give the songs an old school punk vibe. The band is really an eclectic hodgepodge of genres but somehow CTO really makes it work. The vocals come in and out, creating a constantly tense feeling, never entirely sure when the record is going to blast you with vocals or not.

While the LP is a discography of the band’s various releases, it really works well as a single unit. The album has a good flow, and the quality from song to song doesn’t waver too much as is often seen in many discographies. While most people probably know Chris solely for his work as vocalist of Cursed, I highly recommend his other work because all the bands he has been in including CTO have been great. Pick up the LP when A389 releases it you won’t be sorry.

Locktender- Collected

Locktender is a conceptual hardcore band from Cleveland, OH with all of the members of Men as Trees. All of our songs are about and inspired by different works of art and our albums will focus on specific artists. This 'Collected' release is three songs that are all being released on vinyl splits this year. A 7" with Cassilis from Philadelphia, a 12" with Brighter Arrows from Chicago (ex-Lautrec, Mans, Phoenix Bodies), and another 12" that is still TBA. Our singer Nick will do the CD release through his label Mopsorden and Utarid Tapes will do one in Malaysia. As with MAT, everything will be free to download so we are just trying to get this out there as much as possible before our Euro tour this July with Sailing On from Germany. Give it a listen and if you are into it post it and if not thanks anyway. The download link contains lyrics and the cover art in the file but I'll attach the cover art as well.

TBFH Youtube Channel Officially Launched!

As stated when our mediafire was originally shut down, there are some changes on the horizon with the site. We are trying to give as many people as possible one location to find the latest news, reviews, legal downloads, etc etc from the hardcore/punk community.

Now onto another new addition to the growing site, I have decided it would be a great idea to add a Youtube page for the site. On this page bands/labels will be able to premier new music videos. This will be very similar to BlankTV, but more directed toward solely the Hardcore/Punk community.

If you/your band are thinking about doing a video of some kind anytime soon and want a place to premier it, hit me up:

PS by “host” I mean we’re going to have to receive the video for us to personally upload to the youtube account.

PS Part 2: is a perfect tool for sending over video files. 2gb is the maximum on the free accounts over there, so it is perfect for most videos.

Cowardice Sign to Westcoast Worldwide Records

Westcoast Worldwide Records is pleased to announce the signing of Tacoma, Washington based melodic hardcore band Cowardice. The band is currently hard at work at Astronauts Lounge Studios in Tacoma, Washington with producer/engineer Ahren Lanfor recording their new EP entitled “I Am Depression”.

“We are beyond happy to sign with Westcoast Worldwide. We’ve been fans since we found the label through Set It Straight about 7-8 years ago and we can’t wait to be a part of it,” exclaims Cowardice Vocalist Jeremy Bushnell. “This record is being written as a whole record together, not just a bunch of songs. It is more thought out, planned and has more focus than anything we’ve ever written. The sound is more zeroed in, more aggressive and to the point. We really tried to latch on to why a lot of us found this music in the first place. It really boils down to the fact that we all found this because some part of us is not alright. This is a record about dealing with that and realizing you aren’t the only one feeling it. We can’t wait for people to hear it.”

“We are really excited to welcome Cowardice into the Westcoast Worldwide Family”, comments label founder Mikey Hood. We have known about them for a while, and they are a great band, and great kids, and they got a lot of heart. We are very excited to work with Cowardice, and we think everybody will really enjoy this record.”

Look for “I Am Depression” in late spring/early summer 2012 on Westcoast Worldwide. In the meantime, Cowardice will be embarking on a short tour of the Great Northwest, which includes a spot on the highly anticipated Rainfest 2012.

Review:Pick Your Side-Let Me Show You How Democracy Works

After releasing the impressive debut 7 inch Survival Prayer last year I've been waiting to hear more from Pick Your Side, a crushing hardcore band featuring Jeff Beckman(vocalist for Haymaker and guitarist for Left For Dead among other notable bands) and also featuring members of metal/grind stalwarts Fuck The Facts. Their new LP delivers on the promise of their debut in spades, featuring 16 songs on furious hardcore with elements of several different styles being showcased throughout. There are faster straightforward hardcore/powerviolence songs that bring to mind the aforementioned singer's previous band Haymaker, a few more metallic/melodic songs with a crusty influence coming forward, and also a few ridiculously heavy slower songs usually built around a single crushing riff. It's clear from the top notch performance on this record that Beckman's time away from fronting a band hasn't caused him to miss a beat and he sounds better then ever. While the production on the LP retains the raw intensity of the previous 7 inch there is also a noticeable jump in recording quality and things sound much louder and clearer this time around. Expectations were high when Pick Your Side formed due to the popularity of the member's previous band's and it's safe to say they have more then met those with this release. All fans of hardcore/grind/powerviolence owe it to themselves to check out this out ASAP.

Review: No Omega- Metropolis

This was my first listen to the Swedish band No Omega but I was pleasantly surprised. Their release “Metropolis” blends poetic lyricism with dissonant melodies followed by moments of clarity through the usage of melodic passages. It is this blend of hardcore influenced riffs and softer melodies that give this album an emotional tie to the listener and leaves them begging for more.

The song “Breathe” stands out from the rest. It begins with a haunting melody played on guitar followed by the distant screams that echo in the back of your mind. The rest of the song manages to shape the opening guitar riff into something more complex and passionate. As is the case with the rest of the album, “Breathe” leaves you with a sense of hopelessness and despair immersing you in to the minds of No Omega.

If you like melodic hardcore even the slightest bit you need to check out this band and buy this album. I see big things coming from these Swedes in the near future.
