Children of God- Victimized

I'm going to keep this review nice and short because that is how this flexi is. Do you already like Children of God? If the answer was yes then be stoked because this flexi offers one new song from the band that builds upon the already established sound of their previous releases. What I love most about this track is the fact that it is relentless from the first moments. The song starts with a chaotic set of blasting which is broken by an open d-beat, a staple in punk that just never gets boring to me. From there, the track alternates between fast and mid-tempo crushing. This band just really does not get the respect they deserve, each release shows the band improving. Their 7" debut still gets multiple spins on my player. Can't wait to see what an LP would sound like from these guys. Go out and get this flexi before its gone. Another solid release from Children of God and a389, but at this point would really expect anything less?

Review: Plagues/ The Cold Front Split

I currently hold the test press in my hands. As far as I know it is the first proper release from each band. I had been looking forward to the first proper release from Plagues because I had been following them since their days as “Terezodu”. I didn’t know as much about The Cold Front, but I always enjoy going into a record blind.

Side A consists of Plagues blasting out 4 songs. It is very evident that they are attempting an ominous hardcore power violence feel, and they do so with great poise. In a subgenre that is filled to the brim, they still seem to find a way to make it their own. The drums pack a serious punch that makes the band as a whole sound really full. Although the release lacked a proper lyric sheet, the feelings of anger don’t really need words to get the emotions across. The band makes the listener feel the progression of the record. “Unbalancing the Negative Space” is the last track and does an awesome job of giving a natural ending to a great side A. I know that the band has a live performance to meet this Side A, which only makes me giggle with delight for the future of this band and southern California hardcore in general.

Side B came around and gave The Cold Front a chance to do their thing. This being my first listen to the band, I was pleased to learn that they have a lot more melodic feel to them. They sound like Modern Life is War. I have a lot less of an ear for this kind of stuff, but they still managed to grab my attention. The songs have really clear and clean transitions. In my personal opinion the track “ Full Circle” is their best effort on Side B. The off time build ups are done very tastefully and there are some sing along‘s that will be had. I think that given time The Cold Front will be a great band that definitely appeals to the melodic crowd.

This is a good release from Irish Voodoo from 2 bands that seem to have the reigns on their sound from the first release. 3.8/5

Review: Esoteric Youth - Demo

The darker side of Hardcore has certainly come to the fore in recent times in the wake of the now defunct Cursed (who nobody really seemed to dig at the time I might add) and bands like Trap Them and Black Breath bringing back the Entombed buzzsaw tone. I for one am down with all of these elements but they do take a certain je ne sais quoi to combine effectively for an immersive and dynamic listen. Apparently Esoteric Youth (Manchester, UK) pre-empted this review and were like "Hey guys, let's rip everyone apart with our demo, yeah?" as they totally and sincerely nail it.

With only five tracks and an average song length of three minutes, this demo manages to create a wonderful illusion of being LP length without ever outstaying it's welcome. The textures and variety in each song give the listener a really immersive listen that appears to slow down time and leave you headbanging/punching the wall without realising how quickly it's all racing by. Ideal for headphone listening and Room Mosh in equal measure.

Raw production without being biscuit tin treble or recorded-in-the-next-room muffled, engaging Black Metal tremelo sections and tortured vocals coalesce with aforementioned buzzsaw tones and ethereal dynamics through the tasteful use of effects and tempo changes to create the Hardcore equivalent of Megazord stagediving right on to your head at a Nails show. At times sounding akin to punky-crusty peers such as Young And In The Way whilst exchanging high fives with the grimm spirit of Norway circa '93, Esoteric Youth have a bright (I mean dark, very, very dark) future and their next release is sure to be as vicious and bile-filled as you'll come to know and love once you've wrapped this demo around your ears.

In other words, this is heck of good and you really should check it the flip out.

Review:Ruckus-Of Malice And Man

After their excellent debut Human Pollution and their 3 way split with World Of Pain and Xibalba, I was highly anticipating the forthcoming LP from Ruckus, and Of Malice And Man definitely does not disappoint. Much like the aforementioned Xibalba carries the torch for the now again inactive Disembodied, Ruckus channel the vicious metallic hardcore of bands like 100 Demons, All Out War and Merauder. It's been quite a while since I've heard a heavy hardcore album with guitarwork this memorable and accomplished..Each of the 10 songs retain a unique flavor while all sticking to a general blueprint of extremely heavy and vicious metallic hardcore. The excellent recording also ensures that the band has never sounded better. Harvcore Records was wise to pick up this LP for release as it will undoubtfully go down as one of the finest and heaviest hardcore releases this year. If you have been sleeping on one of California's heaviest hardcore bands, now is as good as time as ever to wake up.

Stream: Vices- The Out Crowd Blues

The Out Crowd Blues is the debut EP from Florida’s Vices in which is being released through our friends at Melotov Records. Featuring 5 songs of melodic, passionate and blues influenced hardcore, Vices bring something that I haven’t heard in a while to the table with song structures that are memorable and catchy and as stated before the blues riffs are a cool addition to each song. Think Sabertooth Zombie meets All Teeth, Last Nights and Mountain Man but I still don’t think that gives the sound enough clarification, it’s something you would have to hear for yourself. If you’re into passionate, melodic, fast, angry and riffy hardcore then I would highly recommend this. -Brett

Preorders launch Friday (5/11) and the first 75 orders will receive a FREE Melotov Records shirt.

Stream: Apart- Gray Light LP

Personally one of my most anticipated releases of the year would have to be the debut LP from longtime friends and followers Apart. Compiling 8 amazing tracks is hard to do, but I feel the band has done it with ease. Expect huge things from this band in the coming years.

Mayfly Records were awesome enough to sign the band and release the LP. Preorders should be launching VERY soon, so keep an eye on their website and buy a copy or two when available.

Review: White Lung's "Take the Mirror" Single

After a small tour of the Great White North, and being shut-away in the studio, White Lung is gearing up for the release of their forthcoming sophomore album "Sorry" on Vancouver based label, Deranged. With the bandcamp release of the single “Take the Mirror”, White Lung has proven that they’re not pulling any punches this time around. Although the band has always maintained an aggressive edge, it’s evident that they plan to run a little bit harder with that facet of their music. You can really hear the progression they’ve made as a cohesive unit, and in their general musicality. Mind you, their debut release is still one of my favourite albums of the last 5 years, and even then the guitar-work was still right on key. This time around, rather than having the guitar sit on top of the mix they’ve done a really good job keeping it a lot more tight-knit. Overall, I’d say the engineering is impeccable – nothing is buried in the mix (which as a listener, is very nice), a very clean production, and a good amount of brightness in the guitar tracks. The way the drums bang around inside your skull, and the mix of flavours the guitar delivers is like some kind of sonic salad bar with everything from 70’s UK punk to what almost sounds like borrowed Dead Kennedy riffs; all accompanied by vocals that wrap up the whole package with that screeching banshee riot-grrl style that’s best fit for destruction rather than the glue that helps bind these “four degenerates with no morals.” Be sure to check these guys next time they’re in your town, when the hit the road for the upcoming Sorry LP out May 29th.

Review: Thousand Young - S/T

From the crack-infested crypt some call St. Catharines, Ontario, emerges a hot greasy mess of distortion, and black leather. A quartet of mass killers - born in a pool of battery acid, raised on scratched and warped Chuck Berry records. Thousand Young’s debut S/T release could be called a soundtrack to a midnight bar-brawl, or an alternate universe where Rowland S Howard teamed up with The Melvins. One of the things that really sticks out about this album is the heavy amounts of bounce the drums deliver; somewhat off-time, but not by much, and although the beats are fairly non-complex their drummer manages to keep them fresh by adding a lot of colourful accents. It keeps you bobbing your head, and tapping your toes. The guitar also holds a diverse blend of flavor. It reminds me a lot of Brain Banger at times, but definitely has that dissonant swing that The Birthday Party and Jesus Lizard are so famous for. I think what really separates these guys from the rest of their peers is the combination of that aggressive post-punk sound of the late 80’s with an almost SoCal influence as well. At times I feel like Greg Ginn is shredding a solo and that these guys have listened to an Adolescents album or two. As far as the bass goes, I wasn’t overly impressed but I didn’t think it did the record any harm. Personally, I blame it more on the mixing than the bassist himself. There were quite a few interesting riffs, it had a fairly textural/fuzzy tone, and it followed the drums quite well. Overall, I highly recommend you give these guys at least a listen. If you dig any of the aforementioned bands or anything Albini-esque, this should be right down the weird alley you hang out in.

Dead Weight (WA) Officially Sign To React!

Via React Records: "We’re excited to announce that Dead Weight has joined the REACT! Crew. The band was conceived in 2010 by five guys who share a common love for hardcore. The band’s influences range from Agnostic Front to Cro-Mags to Life’s Blood, and much like its New York Hardcore influencers, They’re a band that values honesty above all else; because, without honesty, it’s not hardcore, it’s just heavy music. Dead Weight is not a NYHC rehash band. Dead Weight is a NWHC band and exists to fly that flag.

Their new EP NWHC is four songs of raging Accused-style speed-picked hardcore, combined with the NYHC influence of bands like Cro-Mags and Sick of it All, and oi!-inspired vocal styles of bands like Negative FX and Life’s Blood. I’ve listened to it non-stop since I got it, and I gotta say DAMN this EP is seriously badass! You can listen to two NEW SONGS by following the link.

Pre-orders will go up in early June, and the record release show will be at this year’s Rainfest on May 25-27th at Neumos in Seattle."

Review: Bottom Out - Mourning

Long Island's own Bottom Out's debut EP. This record takes a ton of influence from All Out War and Merauder. Every song is filled with great mosh parts and awesome 90s metalcore riffs similar to Arkangel and All Out War. No corny mosh parts either. All of the songs are very consistent. Every part transitions really well into the next. The lyrics are real personal and deep. Well written, too. Not some corny 'I hate myself kill me' type shit. Vocalist Larry's voice is pretty unique. Sorta high pitched and strong. On track 3, Home, Vitalo from Backtrack has a sweet guest vocal part. Great placement and use of his voice. No Heaven is the stand out track though. There's a part where it slows into a great pre-mosh part and then an ass-whooper breakdown happens. The 5th and final song, Ashes, is the best way to end the EP. This song is so damn catchy and the build up to the breakdown and the breakdown is perfect. Long Island mosh pit anthem. This record should be out soon. Try and catch this band live if you get the chance. They don't play off of LI very often, but are a great live band.

This record has been recorded for about a year and I've listened to it like 500 times.

Review: Wreak Havoc - Drawing Inspiration

Now broken up, Wreak Havoc hails from Ohio. Harvcore Records is putting out this 7" even though they are no longer a band.

This record is really fast sometimes and really slow other times. It sounds pretty mid-2000s hardcore with some slow and dramatic parts added in. That's the best way to describe it. There is an AFI and Bouncing Souls cover on this record which are both done well. Covers on records are awesome and not enough bands do them, but when 2 out of 5 songs on an EP are covers it kind of takes away from your own music.
